Student-Centered Learning: Peer Reviews

Peer reviews engage students in the process of examining and evaluating the work of other learners. This activity provides opportunities for student-student interactions that stimulates additional learning through an exchange of ideas and knowledge. These collaborations allow learners to gain experience with applying critical thinking skills such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Students also practice interpersonal communication skills, including how to offer and receive constructive feedback.

Both participants benefit from the peer review process. The recipient of this formative evaluation gains suggestions for improvements in preparation for a summative assessment. At the same time, the person delivering the review benefits by having to examine, interpret, and analyze the work of another individual, which also helps with his/her own revision skills. The learners each gain new perspectives and information that enhances both their own work as well as the product of the other individual. Additionally, this sharing of information and thoughts often acts as an external motivator to stimulate both parties to develop a better final project.

A peer review assignment needs to be well constructed and clearly explained to ensure that all learners understand their individual responsibilities, expectations, and objectives. Students should be provided with information and examples about how to offer constructive feedback and collaborative evaluations. They will also need a rubric that breaks down the peer review into specific areas to examine, and creates guidelines for analyzing the most significant criteria. It is important to remind students that effective feedback offers both positive observations as well as advice about areas needing improvement. When assigning a peer review, encourage students to recognize this exercise as a cooperative and supportive learning activity that promotes positive collegial interactions and relationships. An additional benefit is that each individual also develops life-long learning skills regarding a productive evaluation process and self-assessment.
