Out with the old, in with the new!

With our final blog post for the Spring 2020 semester we want to introduce the new Canvas enhanced Rich Content Editor (RCE). This new feature will automatically be implemented on May 26, 2020.

Canvas' Rich Content Editor

The new RCE provides several improvements over the old RCE and from the screenshot above we can immediately see two of these:
  1. The text editing bar is updated to mirror popular software such as MS Word.
  2. The right-side menu is gone, giving the page a wider space for work.
Some changes that might not be so obvious:
  1. Plugins (Yuja, Office 365, etc.) are no longer in the chevron icon, but are now in the plug icon at the end of the text editor bar. Clicking this Plugins icon will now open a small overlay window listing all available plugins, including a handy search box!
    • Per #2 above, the right-side menu, which allowed for quick linking to course content, is now located in the Link icon. Clicking this icon will produce a small drop-down menu with two options: External Links and Course Links.
    • The HTML editing option is now located near the resizing icon (lower right of the editing window), denoted with the </> icon.
    • Pages will now autosave! You can see a demonstration of how this works in this short demo video.
All the above is just the tip of the iceberg! You can read more details on all the new changes and features in the Canvas release notes for the new Rich Content Editor. Additionally, you can find instructions on using these new features in the Canvas Instructor Guides.

Although we will be taking time off from blogging throughout the summer, the CET will continue standing by to assist with questions regarding the RCE or any other Canvas feature usage. Please get in touch with us at CET@lccc.wy.edu.
